Sainsbury’s has said sales of clothes and summer food helped to accelerate growth over the past three months. The UK’s second biggest supermarket chain reported that like-for-like sales excluding fuel – which strip out the impact of new stores – grew by 2.3%. Chief executive Mike Coupe said the warm weather had helped its clothing unit while food sales were strong. “The market is competitive and we continue to manage cost price pressures closely”.
